How Yankees reacted to Giancarlo Stanton’s 119.3-mph homer

Everyone in the Yankees dugout still was giddy about Aaron Judge breaking a 13th inning scoreless tie with a two-run homer when the most amazing part of a 3-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays went down.

Judge was.

Oh yeah, but I’m not surprised by that, Judge said. He’s been taking a lot of good swings and whenever he connects like that, you know it’s going to be hit hard.

That got out in a hurry. We didn’t really have time to celebrate (my homer). By the time he swung… that thing was already gone. It was impressive.

Boone said that he was taken back a little bit by how hard Stanton hit the ball.

I turned to (infield coordinator Carlos Mendoza and said, ‘If you hit that same ball in your prime, it’s bouncing in front of the left fielder,’ Boone said. It was killed.

That Brady has some catching up to do, at least in terms of developing chemistry with new teammates, provides a new twist. He’s rolled with the task of breaking in new supporting cast members throughout his career but hasn’t started this late in getting into the flow.

And some introductions are in order. There’s a first-round rookie running back in the mix, Sony Michel. There’s a former Cincinnati Bengals running back in tow, Jeremy Hill. And there are more veteran receivers trying to stick in Cordarrelle Patterson, Jordan Matthews and Kenny Britt.

The journey of another superhorse to the Belmont makes the horse racing world plenty happy, even if there isn’t the same buzz about ending the Triple Crown drought that followed American Pharoah’s run. Justify also wasn’t primed for this kind of run he didn’t even race as a 2-year-old.

Baffert didn’t realize until Justify’s first race that he might be training this kind of champion. As soon as he won to break his maiden, Justify looked the part to Baffert, and he’s followed that by winning the Santa Anita Derby, Kentucky Derby and Preakness.

Rays recall shortstop prospect Willy Adames from Triple-A Durham

Rookie Willy Adames, recalled earlier in the day from Triple-A Durham, drove in two runs in Monday night’s game for the Tampa Bay Rays, who won for only the second time in 11 games.

Adames, who was recalled after the Rays placed infielder Daniel Robertson on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring, played three games last month with Tampa Bay while infielder Joey Wendle was on paternity leave, and hit his first major league homer off Boston ace Chris Sale in his debut on May 22.

Miller, dealt to Milwaukee on Sunday, joined outfield Denard Span and closer Alex Colome as veteran players traded this season by Tampa Bay.

Shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria, scheduled Monday to start a minor league rehab assignment for a hamstring injury with Class A Charlotte, catcher Wilson Ramos, and pitchers Chris Archer and Nathan Eovaldi are among other veterans that might be moved before the trade deadline.

It’s safe to say that San Diego will work carefully to Martinez Tuesday night at Busch Stadium when the teams meet in the middle game of their three-game series.

Dating back to June 2, Martinez is 17 of 32, a .531 average. He has five homers and 11 RBI, along with an OPS of nearly 1.700.

When I swing at good pitches and go deep into the count, you’re going to see the ball come off the bat, Martinez said to FS Midwest after Monday night’s game. Every once in a while, you’re going to make an out, but I’m feeling good right now.

And why shouldn’t he?

The guy who was dismissed by three big league organizations and was playing in the Frontier League as late as 2014 is currently batting .327 with 10 homers and 42 RBI. He’s on a pace to drive in more than 100 runs and owns a .905 OPS for the season.

While Martinez is a project defensively at first base, his bat more than offsets his occasional defensive gaffes.

Jose has been so hot all season long, St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said. It’s been impressive to watch.

So has the pitching of Miles Mikolas (7-1, 2.27), who has pitched at an All-Star level. Mikolas cruised to a 4-1 win Thursday over Miami, permitting just one unearned run over seven innings on three hits and a walk. He whiffed five.

Eagles running through a million different things after kickoff rule changes

The NFL’s 32 special teams coaches have a new challenge this year as the league’s decision to change kickoffs have thrust them into uncharted water heading into the regular season.

The changes, which include no running starts for the coverage team and a ban on wedge blocking by return teams, have been described as making kickoffs look more like punts, but Eagles special teams coach Dave Fipp isn’t sure exactly what things will look like once teams are on the field. That’s why he’s running through as many options as possible while coming up with a plan.

Williams is heading into the final year of the four-year contract he signed as a fourth-round draft pick in 2015. His base salary this year is $1.9 million, which is a bargain for a player of Williams’ caliber.

Last year was a big adjustment, Gathers said, via the Dallas Morning News. I was going for more trying to be quicker, trying to be faster. But that hurt me in the blocking game a lot where I felt like I was just a body, just a body catching a blow.

A bigger Gathers will, he hopes, be a better Gathers.

Now coming off, I’m delivering the blow, Gathers said. I’m delivering the shot.

Cowboys coach seems to like what he sees from Gathers during offseason practices.

Wentz and Watson, both recovering from torn ACLs, have been able to work a fair bit during recent practices. Watson, whose injury happened a month before Wentz’s and was less extensive, is expected to be able to do some drills this week and be ready for the start of training camp. Wentz has been participating in 7-on-7 drills already, and the Eagles are hopeful that they can have him back in time for Week 1. But with Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles still there as an obviously capable backup, there’s no reason for the Eagles to take any risks by rushing Wentz back. Expect them to continue to bring him along slowly.

Dolphins waive tackle Sean Hickey

The bottoms of rosters are churning this time of year. The Dolphins announced this morning that they had waived tackle Sean Hickey. He’s been knocking around the league the last four years, showing up in camps with the Saints, Patriots, Jets, Vikings, and Dolphins. He was on Miami’s practice squad all of last year, but hasn’t played in an NFL game.

So the owners turned their attention to eliminating their presidential scrutiny. Trump played them for fools. Did they really think he would back off when they’re such an easy target? Did they really think he wouldn’t be petty? Did they really think Trump’s rocky 35-year relationship with the NFL would be ignored when he finally has the league whimpering before him?

Two weeks after the NFL gave Trump what it thought he wanted, he started demanding more. Disinviting the Eagles and reigniting the anthem issue are just the latest indicators that Trump cannot be appeased. It’s not really about the anthem, either. It’s about having a convenient sucker to bully and impress a base of supporters who would rather weaponize patriotism than practice all of its complex principles.

The Seahawks will be his sixth team. Marshall saw his 2017 season with the Giants cut short by an ankle injury. That came on the heels of a subpar 2016 with the Jets, so it’s unclear exactly how much the veteran has left at this point.

Upon learning these facts, the president decided to change the event so that it would be a celebration of the American flag with Eagles fans and performances by the United States Marine Band and the U.S. Army Chorus.

Long, who donated his salary to charity last season and spoke out after violence erupted in his home town of Charlottesville last summer, sharply criticized Fox News for using the images of players in prayer.

Time to see what else JuJu can do (rhyme intended).

After winning all five of the December games Jimmy Garoppolo started and averaging 28.8 points, the San Francisco 49ers decided to put all of their eggs in his basket. Now, Garoppolo is a very rich man and officially the franchise quarterback in San Francisco.

How will he look as a September starter after his first full offseason as a member of the 49ers? That’s the $137.5 million question.

It’s been a bumpy offseason for the New England Patriots. Key players Nate Solder, Malcolm Butler, Danny Amendola, Dion Lewis and Brandin Cooks are gone. Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski have encountered more  bad press related to Brady’s personal trainer, and there’s even been buzz surrounding Brady’s contract as well as his future with the team.

Not the ideal way to cope with the hangover stemming from a painful Super Bowl LII loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

But a lit fire under Brady could actually be a good thing for the Patriots. The last time Brady wasn’t happy, he returned from a four-game suspension and led the Pats to 14 wins in a 15-game span that culminated with their Super Bowl LI victory.

My goal is to not miss a game, Wentz told ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio earlier this month. “I feel I missed plenty last year. I want to be out there with the guys. It’s a fluid process. We’ll see what happens, but I’m confident I’ll be back Week 1 and ready to play against Atlanta.”

Eagles fans have a lot to look forward to, including the banner ceremony that will precede the team’s first game back in Philadelphia, but Wentz’s return has to top that list.

OK, Pittsburgh Steelers fans are probably most looking forward to another year with Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell running things on offense. But there’s nothing particularly new or notable regarding that trio, which should continue to dominate in 2018.

The question is whether Pittsburgh’s famous offensive core might have room for one more (rhyme not intended), because it often looked like wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster had that potential during a magnificent rookie season.

Yankees stuck at Washington airport overnight due to rain

Rain didn’t want the Yankees to play — or to leave.

They got stuck at overnight at Dulles International Airpoint in Virginia from Wednesday into Thursday.

Below, here’s what retired Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira said about harshening the punishment for those caught using performance-enhancing drugs while on The Michael Kay Show on ESPN New York radio on Thursday:

I agree that we need to look at longer bans. We need to look at, OK, if you get popped, your contract can be voided. I think we should absolutely look at those things. You look at other walks of life. If you get caught insider trading or if you get caught cheating on your taxes, you go to prison, you’re banned for life from trading. These are the types of things happening to those quote-unquote cheats. In baseball? Eh, half a season. In football? Four games, whatever it may be.

Among the potential storylines for the series’ 13th season are Cleveland bouncing back from its 0-16 season, Hue Jackson’s third year as head coach, John Dorsey’s first full go-around as general manager, the personalities of coordinators Todd Haley and Gregg Williams and of course the quarterback “battle” between Tyrod Taylor and first overall pick Baker Mayfield.

NFL Films has always been exceptional at bringing fans closer to the game and they do an outstanding job with every show they produce, including HBO’s Hard Knocks, Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam said in a statement.

“We have been asked multiple times about being featured on Hard Knocks, and we really felt like it was our turn this year and the timing was right. We want to be great partners in this league, and we also recognize Hard Knocks gives fans a special opportunity to learn more about our team and players.

Organizationally, we are confident about where we are headed, but we have a lot of work to do in order for this franchise to earn the respect of our fans on the field. We understand winning is ultimately most important to our fans. We’re looking forward to partnering with HBO and NFL Films to show how our team is working hard at training camp to prepare for the 2018 season.”

NFL trade news: Jets’ Christian Hackenberg dealt to Raiders for 2019 conditional pick

Christian Hackenberg’s time in New York has come to an end before it even began.

Jets coach Todd Bowles announced Tuesday the team has traded the quarterback to the Raiders for a 2019 conditional seventh-round pick.

Hackenberg did not participate in workouts during the first day of the team’s OTAs Tuesday, though he did speak to reporters about the adjustments he made this offseason and discussed why it took so long to enact those changes.

“Today is a day of harvest where we see the seed you have planted all these years,” Kyle said to his parents, fighting through tears. “You will always have four sons; there will always be four.”

THE CAVS GAVE Kyle as much time off as he wanted after his brother’s death. When he returned to the team after a week, he also had to deal with a nagging foot injury and ended up taking another week off to manage the issue.

He would end up playing in only four games before the start of the playoffs. In the first round, he went scoreless in two of the first three games against the Indiana Pacers. Then in Game 4, he broke out with 18 points and made two vital 3-pointers that helped win the game and turn the series for the Cavs.

The Bills need depth behind Kelvin Benjamin, and Shepard has experience.

He spent the first four years of his career with Tampa Bay. In 72 career games, Shepard has 47 catches for 634 yards and four touchdowns.

As Carolina’s head coach, Rivera earned the responsibility of formally presenting to prospective owners how the football organization operates. With the chance to briefly meet the winning bidder through that process, Rivera came away learning Tepper already knows a lot about how to do well in the NFL.

“He’s got a sense and feel for football,” Rivera said. “He’s been around it. He owned a small percentage of the Steelers. So he’s got a feel. It was good, and I know eventually we’ll sit down and talk football and talk about this team.

Seahawks hope they’ve solved their running back durability problem

Since Marshawn Lynch left Seattle after the 2015 season, the Seahawks have tried to find a replacement. Nearly every time it seems like they have one, the player has gotten injured.

Last year, the number one guy in both categories of rushing yards and rushing attempts for the Seahawks was the quarterback, whose 586 yards on 95 carries more than doubled the 240 yards generated by Mike Davis. Chris Carson added 208. J.D. MicKissic had 187. Eddie Lacy churned up a mere 179. Thomas Rawls (now a Jet) added 157. C.J. Prosise contributed 23.

The prior year, it was Rawls (349), Wilson (259), Prosise (172), Alex Collins (125), and Troymaine Pope (43).

So, yes, the Seahawks needed help in the running game. Their willingness to invest a first-round pick underscores their belief that it’s a major area of need.

With that thought in mind, Wentz understands that he needs to do everything he can to ensure he remains healthy. The trick is walking that line while still playing with the aggressive edge that has made him the player he is.

“We’ve talked about it quite a bit,” Wentz said, via Sal Paolantonio of ESPN.com. “I think we’re all on the same page.

“I think there is always things I can learn from, ‘OK, maybe I shouldn’t have been so aggressive there.’ There is a time and a place for it. Injuries happen. I believe this one was kind of a freak incident and that is just part of the game. There is always a learning curve. But overall, as an aggressive player, I am not going to change in that sense, I am just going to keep learning. I’m going to be learning how to preserve myself, how to be smart, when to take those chances, when it’s worthwhile, it’s a constant learning throughout my career, but it’s definitely something I am taking seriously at the same time.”

Matt Jones among seven dropped from Colts roster

The Colts have opened up seven roster spots for new faces.

Roback, 23, goes down as one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in Eastern history, even if he didn’t get picked up in April’s NFL Draft — he was vying to become the second Eastern quarterback ever to be drafted, after the Lions took Charlie Batch in the second round in 1998.

There was some pre-draft buzz he could be a sleeper pick, but it never materialized, which Roback acknowledged was disappointing.

There’s a feeling that you get when you sit there and you wonder, and you don’t know what’s next, he said.

That’s a feeling I’m not going to forget. That’s a feeling I’m carrying with me and always will. That’s the motivation.

Gray, 25, was found dead just before 10 p.m. ET Monday night as authorities were called to the house when a friend found injured and unresponsive.

Officers found weapons, digital scales and marijuana inside the residence. A kidnapping of two males on Tuesday morning was thought to be in connection to Gray’s death. Gray had pleaded guilty to a marijuana possession charge last year.

“We have a long way to go but we will get to the bottom of it,” deputy Randy Christian said. “At the end of the day, it will likely all be over drugs and drug money.”

Gray signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent out of North Carolina State in 2014. He appeared in four preseason games that year and recorded three tackles.

Despite plenty of adversity during his collegiate career — Roback lost his starting job after new coach Chris Creighton was hired, and he was suspended early in his redshirt junior season — the Toledo, Ohio, native owns Eastern records in touchdown passes (57) and yards of total offense (8,876), and is second in completions (745) and passing yards (8,653). Two years ago, despite the early season suspension, he led the Eagles to their first winning season since 1995 and their first bowl game since 1987.

Former NFL agent: New Cam Newton contract likely coming in 2020

The Panthers’ contract with Cam Newton is looking like more of a bargain with each passing quarterback deal that’s signed, but sooner or later, that’s going to change.

NFL denies Mike James’ request to use marijuana as a painkiller More Free agent running back Mike James has tried and failed to persuade the NFL to allow him to use marijuana as a painkiller. James told NJ.com that he developed a dependence on prescription painkillers that he took to cope with the aches and pains associated with playing football. His doctor told him that marijuana would be a safer alternative, and he found that it was. Now he’s an advocate for medical marijuana — even as the NFL tells him he’s not allowed to use it and play in the league. I am hopeful that I’ll be able to keep playing football, James said. It is a game that I love very dearly.

However, former Giants defensive end Justin Tuck couldn’t hide his excitement over the upside of his former team’s offense with Barkley being added to a mix that includes dynamic wide receivers Odell Beckham and Sterling Shepard, tight end Evan Engram, and quarterback Eli Manning.

I love the pick, Tuck said Tuesday at the BTIG Charity Day in New York City. He was the best overall player in this NFL Draft, to begin with. It’s hard to get any more value out of a pick at No. 2. But, he should have been the No. 1 pick. I feel good about that selection. It’s definitely a need for [the Giants]. He’s a dynamic player. He’s from this area. The Giants fan base is going to love him. I expect big things from him.

Ex-Rutgers footballer, who got a break once, accused of fracturing woman’s skull

A former Rutgers player who had been given another chance at wiping his record clean after a street brawl three years ago is now facing an attempted homicide charge after an alleged drunken assault on a woman in Nashville.
